The management of Chocolate Box was generous enough to allow us to train at their “drop in” boxing session on Wednesday afternoon. Many of our clients are current and ex clients of Chocolate Box, and we were curious to know how it works. Not all centres are open to the idea of another gym’s trainers coming to check it out, and thankfully this wasn’t the case!
When we arrived, the owner, Luke showed us around. It is a creative space, with small areas devoted to different kinds of training, and decorated like Fight Club. It is dark and dusty, but nonetheless retains a positive and welcoming vibe. Luke was saying that many of their clients become trainers for them, which is a credit to them and their ability to form a strong relationship with their clients!
The space we were training in was upstairs. The warm up was a 1km run, followed by some ramp sprints, and a 100 skips. We then spent time in the ring with an instructor, working on technique, and on the bags practising our techniques. There were 2 other trainers in the session spotting us and keeping us in form. Despite the instructors warning that he was terrible with names, he nailed ours within minutes.
The “drop in” session is an interesting concept. Basically, they run the same session for 45min, and you come anytime between 3.30pm-5.45pm. You start where you start, and finish when you get back to where you started again. It is delightfully flexible! Like us, they allow your kids to run a muck and join in, so it really is a great alternative to time-poor mums.
The only thing i missed was some personalisation, and a good cool down or stretch. I felt my back was vulnerable on a few occasions, but i couldn’t stop without someone telling me to do 50 push ups! We all enjoyed ourselves, but it is for the fit and healthy only! Having said that, if you are fit and healthy, the variety and motivating atmosphere offered by Chocolate Box is unequalled. It is great that the owner is on premises most of the time, and you get a sense that he does care for each and every participant.
So with a few new ideas tucked into our ever-expanding catalogue of exercises, you can expect a few curve balls in your training too!
