Make One Change March 2019: Avoid Fragrance

Fragrance… such an innocuous word… with such ominous meaning… Fragrance, Parfum, or Perfume are generic words for a group of chemicals that mask the odor of any particular product. They are technically the “intellectual property” of the company that create’s them, and in order to protect the company’s IP, Australian Law does not require the ingredients to be listed on the packaging. Unfortunately, many of the ingredients will make us sick. Mild consequences include headaches, rashes, and general malaise. More serious poisoning can contribute to respiratory illness, thyroid dysfunction, cancer, and hormone disruption (think infertility and acne… to name a few).

This article from @environmentalworkinggroup 's research on fragrances, specifically perfumes (including the brands which have the highest health-reducing chemicals out of those tested). In this article they've both checked out what chemicals are in each fragrance, and outlined the health issues that each chemical or chemical group contributes towards. Furthermore "The federal government is equally uninformed. A review of government records shows that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not assessed the vast majority of these secret fragrance chemicals for safety when used in spray-on personal care products such as fragrances. Nor have most been evaluated by the safety review panel of the International Fragrance Association or any other publicly accountable institution." 3163 ingredients behind the word "fragrance", according to @environmentalworkinggroup The products containing the worst ones (the ones that can cause birth defects) include facial cleanser, after shave, astringents, hair color, cleaning products, and acne treatment. But look at everything from your lip balm, to your moisturiser, to your laundry detergent. And if you use a mainstream perfume, CHUCK that out too (no matter how much it costed). Our bodies cope with small amounts of toxins, like smelling petrol at the gas station. You wouldn't perfume your house with it and breath it 24/7 would you! A reminder from Dr Seuss, an endless pit of wisdom! I care a lot. But then again I had rare cancer. Are you going to wait until a huge life event like that to change? Haven't you wondered why so many survivors change their habits? #Repost @tozerowasteliving • • • • • (REPOST) ????FOLLOW: @tozerowasteliving ????FOLLOW: @tozerowasteliving ????FOLLOW: @tozerowasteliving . . . #saveourplanet #plasticpollution #savetheoceans #plasticpollutes #noplanetb #savetheplanet #environmentalism #protectourplanet #savetheearth #environment #planetorplastic #plasticsucks #plasticwaste #plasticfree #singleuseplastic #plasticocean #stopplastic #oceanplastic #saynotoplastic #reduceplastic #lessplastic #cleanoceans #noexcuseforsingleuse #plastickills #saveourseas #take3forthesea #savetheocean repost @mindfullychiclife via @virolapp
