Make One Change February 2020: Switch Your Super

This month we looked at where, what for many of us is our largest investment, is being invested! February’s change was to switch your super if you are unhappy with what you find with your current super! Switching is easy, and there are a plethora of ethical companies popping up in Australia for you to invest your super ethically.

FEBRUARY CHANGE: Switch Your Super. We know that your money is more powerful than your vote, sonvote with your money and switch your super to one of Australia's ethical and (more) transparent companies! This is an opportunity to send thousands of dollars towards industries you believe in, and the returns appear to be comparable, too! Do your research, and we'll do some with you too for #makeonechangefeb20 ! #Repost @verve.super • • • • • There are no silly questions when it comes to money and superannuation. Finance is a world where women and marginalised people have not always been welcome. This has limited our access to financial capital, and ultimately our access to power. We offer non-complicated processes and communications at Verve not only because it makes life easier for our members, but also to disrupt an industry that has in many ways excluded women, in various ways, across several generations. It's activism as a service and we're proud of it. #activism #financialequality #financialindependence #equality #women #money #feminism #WomenwithVerve #VerveSuper #genderequality #moneywisdom

At least, start thinking about it! #makeonechangefeb20 #Repost @catherineagopcan • • • • • #100WaysSaveMoneySaveThePlanet … #85 Invest Like You Give A Damn You give a damn right? You want your money to do good so it can change the world, allow you to sleep at night and provide security in the future? It’s time to put your money to work for you. Many individuals think investing is a bad thing. Partly because all you hear about are the big guys making moves on the stock market, but the world economy is more complex than that and it includes companies that are inventing things to make the future better and these companies need your support. Investing also goes beyond the stock market. You can invest in local businesses by banking local. You can invest in small farms by supporting a CSA. You can find companies that are developing alternative energy or ways to clean water. … As the New Year approaches and you review your financial goals, consider #sustainableinvesting. It’s not as out of reach as you might think. Sit down and get to know your sustainable values and find companies that fit those values. Start with this book and continue educating yourself from there. I’ve also link a post with lots of resources that cover: – What is sustainable investing – How to check if your investments are good for the planet? – What alternative investments exist besides the stock market? – What greenwashing in investing means? – What your investment values are? (Good to know if you hate plastic but continue to profit from oil and plastic companies 😞) #investlikeyougiveadamn #protectthefuture #noplanetb

Probably the biggest impact that we can make on our own… switch your super! #Repost @minnieveggie • • • • • You carry reusables, practice a plant-rich diet but do you know where your assets are invested in? What if your portfolio was heavily invested in fossil fuels or in companies that have poor labor practices or poor animal welfare practices? Remember that you can also make a difference as a shareholder or investor. Talk to your financial advisor about where your money is invested in. There are plethora of ESG (environmental, social, governance) funds out there now that you have the choice to align your investments with your values and support those that are making an effort to integrate ESG into their business activities 👍 Special thanks to @climatesolutions2020 for providing me the platform to educate the public on this issue and @thekuppo for sponsoring our table with their plastic-free reusable cup swags 💚😊 #makeonechangefeb20

For an entire super fund to qualify for RIAA certification, the following criteria must be met: At least two ethical investment strategies must be applied across the entire super fund. At least 75% of the assets under management have to be invested following a clearly defined ethical (or responsible) investment strategy. The ethical investment strategies must be regularly audited and verified by a third party appointed by RIAA. (The firms Grant Thornton and KPMG currently do the auditing). Fund performance results must be published at least every six months, and a minimum of the top 100 investment holdings must be shown. After 1 July 2016, all investment holdings must be disclosed to maintain certification. The fund managers must actively advocate for more responsible and ethical financial markets and keep its members informed about ethical and responsible investment strategies. #makeonechangefeb20 @choiceaustralia https://www.choice.com.au/money/financial-planning-and-investing/superannuation/articles/australian-ethical-super-funds
