Make One Change Dec 2019: Have a Conscious Christmas

Have a Conscious Christmas… that’s right, and not terribly easy! In the month of parties, takeaway coffee, rushing around and tinsel, being environmentally friendly doesn’t exactly top our list of priorities… But it ought to! Christmas is a valuable time of year for retailers, if we all buy wooden toys, bamboo party plates, and dried flower wreaths those things will be prioritized in next year’s offerings, and then there will be competition, and then choice, and THEN it gets easy!

However, together we have to do the hard yards now. No more plastic wrapping paper. No more Glad wrap. No more cheap plastic stocking fillers. Because Santa has seen what our plastic waste has done to the planet, and doesn’t believe in petrochemical products anymore!

and YES, it will be hard. YES, it will be inconvenient. YES it will be expensive. but isn’t it worth it?

December change: have a conscious Christmas… This means looking at what you're purchasing and deciding if the plastic packaging is worth it … are there alternatives? You bet there are! That's what we'll be exploring this month!! As a start, switch from plastic plates, cups, and straws at the next party you host to paper. Then compost them with the leftovers! #Repost @eco_patch • • • • • I love the idea of earthy and plastic-free Christmas decorations- even better when you can make them yourself. what a great activity to do with the kids. Thank you to @plantedinthewoods for the image and inspiration. 📷 plantedinthewoods - - #consciousgiving #mindfulliving #plasticfreechristmas #ditchtheplastic #ecolifestyle #ecofriendlyliving #onlineshopping #ecoessentials #zeroplastic #handmade #handmadechristmas #towardszerowaste #wasteless #sustainablehome #plasticfreeoceans #plasticfreeliving #plasticfreerevolution ( #📷 @hummingbirdsingsau )

Let's start with wrapping! What paper do you use? How can you stick it without tape? Is there such a thing as plastic free sticky tape? It's worth googling! #Repost @littleleaf_organic • • • • • Our festive muslins make a great eco Christmas wrap and are part of the gift – useful if you’re trying to avoid too much pointless unrecyclable wrapping paper this Christmas ⛄️ We have two original prints, a Snowman and a Christmas Tree 🎄 #organicmuslins #gotscertifiedorganic #soilassociationorganic #newparentgift #christmasbaby #christmasbabyshower #ecobaby #ecobabyshower #greenbabyshower #ethicalbabygifts #furoshikiwrap #noplastic #snowman #christmastree #ecochristmas #ecochristmasgifts #greenchristmas #buybetterbuyless #muslins #ethicalchristmas #ethicalchristmasshopping #lesswasteliving #sustainablechristmasgifts #sustainablechristmas #plasticfreelivinguk

Here's a living, healthy, oxygenating idea!! #Repost @sustainable.collective • • • • • Have you heard of the tree rental scheme before?🎄Speaking of the debate whether you should get a real or artificial Christmas tree, there is a solution for anyone opting for the natural tree but hates the fact that it will need to get disposed after one use! Of course you could always plant it back in your garden (if you have one) or if you lack the space, time or skills- perhaps it’s something to look into 🙂 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What about you guys? Are you familiar with this option, have you ever used it? What about the practicality? 🎄 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📷@annluit ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #SustainableCollective #sustainableliving #sustainability #sustainablechristmas #minimalism #zerowaste #wastefree #ecochristmas #zerowastehome #plasticfree #journeytozerowaste #goingzerowaste #nowaste #ecofriendlylife

Give a shit, not give crap this Christmas! #Repost @ecowithem_ • • • • • We’ve all been there right? THIS Christmas will be different, we say. This will be the year I will be prepared and only give gifts in line with my ethics🎅🏻. I’m going to make things – with my HANDS 🖐🏻Nek minute, it’s December 24th and you’re running around a too-brightly lit department store buying crap like a mechanical ice cream cone that rotates the ice cream for you, to prevent you from having to exert yourself doing that wrist-turny-thing (not kidding, that’s a real thing!) 🍦 🤦🏼‍♀️. But never fear my friends – I’m here with a timely Public Service Announcement: start now. Start making the things you are wanting to give for Christmas. Scout the op shops for cute teacups to plant succulents in 🌵 Search the secondhand markets for pre-loved bikes and toys and antiques 🚲 Go to a rescue home and adopt an old cat with one eye and a lotta love to give 🐈 Buy from small business owners who are pouring their gifts and talents into a dream 🎨 Next week I’m going to do a whole sketchy series of sustainable ideas for Christmas from experiences to upcycles to conscious companies and ideas. But for now her is one of my typically minimal designs 😆. Spread the word far and wide. Don’t give crap this Christmas, give a shit instead! 🎄 #makeonechangedec19

Change us hard. Our habits are enacted daily with little-to-no thought. However we can't rely on someone else to force environmental change, especially in Australia because 1) we live in a democracy and even though it's the right thing to do, having person dictate to us is a dictatorship, and 2) it's not our current government's priority… However there's SO MUCH we can do at ground level if YOU are willing to forgo a little convenience and look for an alternative. After all, is your convenience really worth more than the collective health of the planet?? #Repost @ecoswapz • • • • • www.ecoswapz.com #ecoswapz #ecofriendly #reduceplasticwaste #smallchangesbigresults #sustainability #bethechange #savetheworld #makeonechangedec19

Low waste wrapping ideas! #Repost @wastefreeplanet • • • • • We absolutely love these low waste gift wrapping suggestions by @plantedinthewoods If you aren't already following them, be sure to go give them a follow! Repost @plantedinthewoods ・・・ Low waste gift wrapping 🎁 . Did you know that most wrapping paper gets thrown into the landfill because it’s not able to be recycle? A lot of wrapping paper is laminated, dyed or contains glitter and other additives which can’t be properly recycled. That goes for bows and ribbons as well. With the holidays being the most wasteful time of year, let’s do what we can to reduce waste wherever we can! . There are tons of ways to wrap your gifts sustainably and budget friendly. Head to our stories to see how we have implemented some of these ideas, or if your interested in some wrapping inspiration! #makeonechangedec19

Thinking outside the square for advent calendars! #Repost @aliceinscandilandshop • • • • • Every year I love to create a fun and interactive Advent Calendar for my girls and this beauty is just perfect for customising to your special person. Big kids or little, the options and ideas for this cotton canvas, reusable calendar are endless. I like to have a mix of sweets and chocolates for some days, a little toy or game on others. I also create little invites, for the days when we're off to do something extra special and Christmassy. What's even better, it's only £17 and can be brought out year after year. . . . . . #christmascalendar #adventcalendar #christmasstyling #myhomevibe #homestyle #ecoconscious #environmentallyfriendlychristmas #lovelostwithiel #lovecornwall #lovelythings #theshopkeepers #theindependentshopkeepers #sharingaworldofshops #myhyggehome #onthewall #christmasdecorations #chistmasideas #christmasinterior #mycosyhome #interieurs #kidsroom #scandinavianhome #abmhome #ekbbhome #apartmenttherapy #nordicstyle #scandinavianstyle #interior_and_living #shopstyle
