This Saturday we met at Collaroy SLSC for our very own coast trek north to Avalon. We decided not to go all the way to Palm Beach, as Avalon is exactly 15K which is as far as we ever need to go in Nepal! It was also Mag’s and Kass’s first hikes back after their respective surgeries, and this hike offers them the opportunity to wait for a bus back to Collaroy at any point.
Kass certainly has an inspirational story. She was supposed to come with us to Nepal last year, but broke both her knees in a skiing accident 8 weeks before we left. She spent the past year rehabilitating, with the intention of coming on this year’s trip. However, things did not quite go to plan when her pain and rehabilitation did not progress as expected. In addition, she had another fall which caused additional tearing to the knee tissues. She took it upon herself to investigate further when the niggling pain and swelling was still persistent several weeks afterwards. They discovered that there was a problem with her last surgery, cleaned it up, and suddenly she’s up and moving better than she was 8 weeks ago! Apart from some anxiety about her fitness, Kass is back on her feet and fully expected to complete our Nepal hike.
For this Saturday’s coast trek, we started at 8am, with a 2km soft sand trudge. Jade and Dave had already clocked up more than 4K because they left an hour early from Dee Why!
We then hugged the headlands, from North Narrabeen, Turrimetta, Warriewood, Mona Vale, Bungan, Newport, Bilgola, and finally Avalon!
Mags and Kass were pretty exhausted by the time we reached Newport. We stopped for a snack and toilet break, then opened up trusty ol’ Google Maps and discovered that our goal was only 2.7K away. They were both very brave and stoic and decided to finish with the group. We stumbled into the first cafe we found and shared a celebratory coffee, then stuffed our dogs into our backpacks and caught the bus home again.
It is quite a pleasant weekend activity, and always lovely to see more of our own backyard! Of course, we are not doing this for ourselves! We are raising money for a very worthy Australian charity called Seven Women. You can help us by buying one of their products from our website https://into-you.com.au/shop
We leave for Nepal in just 4 weeks, eek!
