The walk that was scheduled as our first hike was a lot like being smacked in the butt and calves with a cricket bat. It was certainly a shock to the system!
We met at the gym and ran through a short introduction, then headed off down Veterans Pde to get to the bottom of the plateau. We then proceeded to ascend the plateau no less than 6 times in the 6 kilometre route, leaving our heads dizzy and our legs like jelly. We pretty much collapsed into Persia Belle for an early lunch before stumbling back to the gym to go through the hiking weights program (you read correctly).
You can also do the hiking weights, here’s the program: Hiking Group Weights
Many of us struggled in certain sections; particularly Kass who broke both knees last year, and Margaret who has never done anything like this before! Margaret caught a tough lesson in nutrition before exercise – that you need some kind of easily-digestible sugar. She suffered frequent bouts of dizziness until we got an apple into her (thanks to Di and Dave for giving up their emergency food)! To her credit, she still finished and walked [limped] again on Sunday! Special mention has to go to Karyn, who pulled her up a couple of the hills with her walking sticks. GO TEAM!
This week we will meet at 930am on Saturday at Battle Blvd, Seaforth, we will be hiking the Spit to Manly walk before catching a bus back to our cars. You can join us week to week for $25 (donated to our charity, Seven Women http://sevenwomen.org), or $199 including all hikes, a team T and training. Join up here: 2016 Hiking Group
We have chosen to support Seven Women again, a sensational Australian-born charity that educates disabled and disadvantaged women in Nepal. You can read more about them here: https://into-you.com.au/seven-women-worthy-charity/ . We will be selling their beanies, finger puppets, felt purses, and scarves. Please contact the gym to pre-order!
