Why I Don’t Participate in Halloween

I know, i’m a fun-stopper. But i intend to avoid Halloween for as long as humanly possible.

For a start, if we wanted to celebrate the true, pagan, Halloween, we would do it in April. History.com says that it is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts. Timed on the cusp of Autumn and Winter, plenty and paucity, life and death, it makes sense for the people living at those times to try a survive winter in every way they knew how. Just to clarify, this is a pagan ritual… i am not pagan or any other religion for that matter!

In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honour all saints and martyrs; the holiday, All Saints’ Day, incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. Interesting, so this means that the Catholic Church adopted a pagan ritual and put a new spin on it? I wonder how Jesus (a Jewish man) would feel about that?

Obviously over time, it appears to have become neither of these things, except an excuse to pump lollies into other people’s kids. Which is why i don’t like it.

  1. I work really hard. I am “off the clock” at 7pm when my kids go to bed, i don’t want to be opening my door every 5min to a bunch of others people’s kids for a meaningless holiday (sure, i’m a grinch!).
  2. I don’t want to harm these kid’s health by giving them lollies, but are they going to throw eggs at my house (a “trick”) if i give them apples or mandarins? It’s happened before.
  3. The idea of rocking up to complete stranger’s house and allowing them to give my child food… i don’t know what they’re giving them, healthy or otherwise. I don’t want to wrestle with my kids to see what they’ve got, what will make them sick, what is unacceptable as food. I know i am perceived as a freak in this regard, but i know what i know and everyone wants the best for their children.

The whole event just makes me uncomfortable, and not just because of the creepy decorations. Perhaps it would be different if we lived 2000 years ago on another continent….

Completely agree and lucky for me I have a large dog and a difficult gate. Never had it in Uk had Bonfire night which was great fun with fireworks.
Another things that gets my goat about it is all the plastic crap people buy to decorate which ends up in the garbage!
