We resumed hiking group this week after a scheduled week off to recover, or catch up on training.
We started a new weights program, and added a hills and stairs session to our weekly homework hikes. So it was with heavy legs that we resumed our Saturday sessions this week! Since most us were (or should have been) sore, we planned a short jaunt up to Barrenjoey headland.
Even though it was short, it is exceedingly steep, so we knew the group would get a workout.
What we didn’t anticipate was our lead group reaching the top in half the time it should have took! Jade took a break from pushing Clare and her 3YO (in a trailer), to run the remainder of the hill and collect the lead group. Then then walked briskly back down the hill, and came up the “smugglers” route – a grueling 1km of stairs.
Special commendations to Di, who had surgery last Friday, and still made it to the session! She also made it to the top! Another special shout out to Dave, our late comer to the group, who did the stairs with the lead group, just for the heck of it. Dave was also carrying extra weight in his pack. His fitness has come in leaps and bounds, and it is truly exciting to watch him flourish after his history of health problems.
After a snack and a bit of exploring, we took the mandatory summit pic, then made our way back down to our cars.
A group headed off for a beer, but were gazumped by the fact the bar was closed… too bad 😉
Next week we head out to Terry Hills, hiking as much of the Perimetre Trail as we have time for!
